Former India goalkeeper Brahmanand Sankhwalkar conferred with Padma Shri award
A true Indian football great, former goalkeeper Brahmanand Sankhwalkar was conferred with the prestigious Padma Shri award by the Indian government on Tuesday for his contributions to Indian football.

Sankhwalkar is the eighth Indian footballer to receive the award and the first goalkeeper to have this honour.

One of the finest Indian goalkeepers, Sankhwalkar captained India from 1983 to 1986. He was named the footballer of the decade 1985-1995 by the All India Football Federation and was also awarded the Arjuna award in 1997.
In a career that spanned 25 years, Sankhwalkar earned his reputation while playing for Goan club Salgaocar FC and the Goa state team who he led to Santosh trophy success in 1983 and 1984.
He was also part of India’s 1986 Asian Games team and also captained the side in their match against German side Bochum XI in 1986.
In club football, he won the Rovers Cup with Salgaocar FC which was the club’s first success in the competition.
