NorthEast United FC have announced the signing of Martiniquan footballer Mathias Coureur ahead of the 2021-22 Hero Indian Super League (Hero ISL).

Coureur has plied his trade in a number of countries like France, Bulgaria, Georgia, Spain, Kazakhstan, South Korea and Turkey. He has also played for his national team quite a few times.

The fleet-footed forward most recently represented Samsunspor in Turkey and before that Cherno More in Bulgaria. He scored 15 goals in as many matches in the 2020-21 season.

“Heureux de vous annoncer ma signature pour le @NEUtdFC en inde [Happy to announce my signature for NorthEast United FC in India]. New country, new challenge,” Coureur tweeted after the confirmation.

The 33-year-old is the tenth signing for the Highlanders in the last couple of weeks. He follows Emanuel Lalchhanchhuaha, Laldanmawia Ralte, Sehnaj Singh, Tondonba Singh, Joe Zoherliana, Hernan Santana, William Lalnunfela, Mohamed Irshad and Jestin George into the team.

Last season, NorthEast United FC finished third on the points table behind eventual winners Mumbai City FC and ATK Mohun Bagan. They lost to the Mariners in the semi-finals. Since the inception of the league in 2014, it was their second appearance in the semis.

The Highlanders are playing 2018-19 Hero ISL champions Bengaluru FC in their first match of the 2021-22 campaign on November 20 at the Athletic Stadium in Bambolim.
