Delhi Dynamos FC finally picked up their first victory of the season as they overcame defending champions Chennaiyin FC 3-1 at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Chennai on Saturday. Goals from Daniel Lalhlimpuia, Nandhakumar Sekar and Bikramjit Singh put a smile on head coach Josep Gombau’s face as the Lions clawed their way out of the bottom of the table ahead of the international break.

At the post-match press conference, Gombau cut a delighted figure as he addressed the media. The Spaniard began by speaking about the importance of the victory, especially considering that it was their last match of the calendar year. "I think it was very important for us to go into the break with our first win. I think we deserved to win some games (previously). Today, we win and now we have this break which will give us confidence. We have very young players in the squad. It will be good for them as well," he said.

Gombau also commented on the impact the victory will have on his young squad and how the players can use the confidence to their advantage. "For us, the most important thing is to develop the young players. They can be very good potential players for the next season. When I came to the club, I knew we had a young squad. These players need time. Today we had Vinit Rai, Lallianzuala Chhangte, Nandhakumar Sekar, Shubham Sarangi. These players need these kinds of experiences. I think now the goal of the club should be to go game by game. There are six more games to go and we need to try and develop these players," he commented.

Talking about the performances of Sekar and Lalhlimpuia, Gombau admitted that he was extremely impressed with their growth over the past two months. "They came two weeks before the start of the league. Daniel and Nandha came to the league with injuries. In two months, they have grown a lot and they are gaining confidence. I am so happy with them. We have been making mistakes throughout the season but it is also true that we have been playing football," he said.

From Chennaiyin’s end, head coach John Gregory was present to take questions from the media. The Englishman once again bemoaned his side’s failure to make the most of their opportunities and said, "Listen we had a fantastic (first) 45 minutes. They had one attack and scored, which was really disappointing. We have this real bad habit of conceding in the first 15 minutes. Then you have to go out and score two goals to win the game. We had an abundance of opportunities. It should have been 3-0 for us at half-time."
