Chennaiyin FC, on Tuesday, announced that the club has parted ways with midfielder Gregory Nelson. The 31-year-old spent two seasons with Chennaiyin and was a big hit with the fans.

The Dutch winger joined Chennaiyin prior to the Hero Indian Super League (Hero ISL) 2017-18 season and played a big role in the team's title-winning run in his maiden season in India. Nelson made 19 appearances that season, contributing with a goal and five assists. Blessed with pace, power and the ability to pick out the odd eye-of-the-needle cross from the flanks, he was a handful for opposition defences.

Adept at set-pieces, Nelson will, perhaps, be best remembered for the two first-half corner kicks which led to two Mailson Alves goals in the memorable Hero ISL 2017-18 final against Bengaluru FC. The goals helped Chennaiyin come back from being a goal down and eventually led them to the title.

The 2018-19 season was a forgettable one for the Dutchman, whose playing time was restricted to just 834 minutes over the course of the entire campaign, which saw Chennaiyin finish at the bottom of the table. Despite starved of minutes at the middle, Nelson still managed to register two goals to his name.
