Delhi Dynamos FC are still in the search of their first victory of the 2018-19 Hero Indian Super League (ISL) season. With two draws and a defeat, Josep Gombau will be looking for all three points when his side take on defending champions Chennaiyin FC at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi on Tuesday.

Ahead of the match, indiansuperleague.com caught up with the Lions’ Serbian striker Andrija Kaludjerovic to uncover his footballing journey and his thoughts on the clash against the South Indian outfit. Here are the excerpts:

How has your first season been so far?

Yes, my first season here. I’m really surprised at how the organization is here and everything, how the people at the club treat us like players and persons. In Asia, maybe my best experience is in India.

How has the adjustment been to the new team and new players?

I’ve changed some clubs and it’s not always easy when you come for the first time in a new club with new players, but you know here, the people adapt to you very fast. I didn’t see this in my last clubs you know, how the people here accept you and everything. The coach I know from the Australian league because he was there where I played last season. So this wasn’t a problem for me to adapt to this coach (Josep Gombau).

Talk us through your footballing career.

I started playing football in my hometown, Backa Topola. I started to play football because my father was a coach, a football coach and I started to play football when I was five years old. When I was 14 years old, I got to Belgrade to sign for some good academy where I spent eight years and I debuted at 16 years in the Super League of Serbia. I’m now actually the top scorer in the history of the Serbian Super League. I played there for the best club in Backa, not only Serbia - Red Star Belgrade. A lot of people know of this club because they were world champions, they won the Champions League 20 years ago and then, I started my career outside of my country. First China, then some countries in Europe - Spain, Switzerland and Cyprus. Then I went to Asia again and I played in Australia, Thailand and now in India.

What brought you to India to play in the Hero ISL?

Yeah, first of all, I got a good offer from this club and the people who called me, the people from the club, I felt that they really wanted me, so that was the first reason why I decided to come here. Then I asked some people how it is here and I got good information. For example from Rene Mihelic. I asked him how it is here and he told me all the best things because you know, people who don’t come to India think something different about India. Same with me because I didn’t know about India. You can have a wrong opinion, but I can tell all the people in the world that they need to come here and then to give an opinion about India. My opinion is really good and we enjoy our time here, me and my family and this club. I will give the best of me to the Delhi Dynamos FC to stay for some more seasons.

Thoughts on the games so far.

Yes, we played three games, not the result we expected because we have only two points from a possible nine. We don’t play bad football, but we don’t get results. So now I hope, we will get good results because we need points. We need results because this is a short league - only 18 games. We still have 15 games and we want the best from this season, to be in the final and so we must start to collect points.

How good was it to get your first goal in the Hero ISL?

Yeah, it’s always good for strikers to score goals especially because I didn’t score in the first two games and then I scored a very important goal for my team and we took one point from a very difficult game in Kerala. There are 50,000 people at all the games so it’s not easy to take points from there. We took the point and I scored the goal, that’s what’s good. Good for my next games to have the confidence to play even better on the field because a striker who scores more goals feels confident on the field with the ball and other things. It is totally different if you don’t score the goals. If you don’t score in maybe two, three or four games, it’s not good for any striker. Then you start to lose confidence and also people around start to doubt about the quality, but this is the life of the football player, especially strikers you know. We have to score the goals. We’re not good when we’re not scoring the goals. This is the true reality.

Thoughts on the match against Chennaiyin FC?

Yeah, tomorrow will be surely a difficult game. They are champions, they lost three games. I don’t really know this team, I don’t really know how they play, it’s only what the coach has shown us from short videos, but when they are champions, they surely have the quality.
