Atlético de Kolkata thump Spanish side in pre-season practice game
Defending Hero Indian Super League (ISL) champions Atlético de Kolkata won their first friendly match against Spanish side Gimnástica Segoviana CF’s Under-19 outfit 9-0 at the Los Angeles de San Rafael ground in Segovia, Spain.
Gimnástica Segoviana play in the Tercera División in Spain.
The Kolkata-based ISL club's marquee player, Portuguese international Hélder Postiga scored a hat-trick, while Canadian forward Iain Hume netted a brace. Jewel Raja, Jaime Gavilán Martinez, Arata Izumi and Valdo also put one on the scoreboard each, for the team, on Thursday.
Last season, Atlético de Kolkata had defeated the same team 6-0.
“We are just at the beginning of our preparations for the second season of ISL. The match provided an opportunity for the support staff to observe where the fitness level of each player stands at the moment and I am happy with the progress each player is making at the moment,” Antonio Lopez Habas, Atlético de Kolkata head coach, said in a press release.
“These friendly matches will help the footballers interact with each other and gel as a unit prior to the season,” he added.
The West Bengal-side begin their Hero ISL 2015 campaign in the season-opener on October 3rd against last year’s semi-finalists Chennaiyin FC at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Chennai.
