David Williams has signed a one-year contract with ATK Mohun Bagan FC, the Hero Indian Super League (Hero ISL) club confirmed on Tuesday. Part of the erstwhile ATK FC side that won the Hero ISL trophy last season, Williams is set to continue his stay in Kolkata and will be relishing the prospect of linking up with Roy Krishna again having enjoyed a fruitful partnership with the Fiji international.

“Very excited to have re-signed with the club for one more year. Very grateful for this opportunity and very happy to be a part of the history (of the club). We created history last season and I’m sure this season will be no different. We have an excited squad so just looking forward to getting back to the training and the games,” Williams said after penning his contract.

The former Australia international made a massive impact in his first Hero ISL season and he will be eager to continue in a similar way in the upcoming campaign. After beginning his career with Queensland Roar in Australia, Williams moved to Brøndby IF and was part of the team that competes in Denmark’s top division.

Following his European experience with Brøndby, Williams returned to Australia and had stints with North Queensland Fury and Sydney FC before spending five years at Melbourne City. He was named Melbourne’s Player of the Season for the 2013-14 campaign and was on the move again in 2016, joining Hungarian outfit Szombathelyi Haladás.

His last club prior to joining ATK in 2019 was New Zealand’s Wellington Phoenix. It was at Wellington that Williams first met Krishna and their relationship and understanding has continued to blossom since. ATK reaped the benefits of the duos time together at Wellington Phoenix with their strong understanding and familiarity with one another on the pitch evident for all to see in Hero ISL 2019-20.

The 32-year-old scored some important goals last season, finding the back of the net seven times besides also providing five assists. Williams follows the likes of Krishna, Prabir Das, Pritam Kotal, Jobby Justin, Edu Garcia and Sumit Rathi in signing new contracts with ATK Mohun Bagan.
