FC Goa have completed the signing of Spanish left-back Carlos Pena for the upcoming 2018-19 campaign of the Hero Indian Super League (Hero ISL). The defender adds to the growing contingent of Spanish players in the league.

34-year-old Pena has a wealth of experience playing for a host of Spanish clubs during his career. Pena last played for Spanish Segunda Division B side Lorca FC during the 2017-18 season. The left-back first began his professional career with Barcelona’s youth academy, representing their reserve teams – Barcelona B and Barcelona C. His most successful stint was with Albacete in the Spanish Segunda division B, where he appeared over 100 times for the club.

The veteran would go on to make a name for himself for clubs such as Recreativo, Real Valladolid, Real Oviedo and Getafe, before joining the Hero ISL. Pena has never represented the Spanish national senior team; however, he has made appearances for the U20 and U21 sides.

One of the hallmarks of Goa’s 2017-18 campaign was their attacking prowess in front of goal. The Gaurs registered a total of 43 goals throughout the season - the most by any side in the league. However, their defensive lapses proved to be their Achilles heel. The addition of Pena to the Goa backline will provide the much-needed experience and composure. Last year’s semi-finalists will be hoping that their new recruit will be able to steady the ship and deliver success when the new season gets underway.
