A colossus of Indian football, Sunil Chhetri is a household name in India. One of a handful Indian players to have played professionally outside the country, Chhetri is also India’s all-time leading scorer with 51 international goals. This includes a pair of hat-tricks against Vietnam and Tajikistan. Born in Secunderabad, and of Nepali descent, Chhetri began his professional career with Mohun Bagan. Before long his superlative performances earned foreign interest with a deal with Queens Park Rangers falling through due to a UK government restriction. He became the first Indian to participate in a Major League Soccer side when he took to the field for the Kansas City Wizards. Another foreign stint beckoned soon, this time with Sporting Clube de Portugal B team. Chhetri has also represented the following heavyweights of Indian football: Dempo SC, East Bengal, Mohun Bagan and Bengaluru FC.
Hero ISL 2015 saw him become the first Indian to score a hat-trick in the league. He ended the season with seven goals for Mumbai, making him the highest scoring Indian in the league. Chhetri was also the most expensive domestic player going to Mumbai City FC for Rs 1.2 crore in 2015.
