Lyngdoh: Performing under pressure is what makes you champions

Two-time Hero Indian Super League (ISL) champions Atlético de Kolkata (ATK) roped in one of the most in-demand midfielders in the country, Eugeneson Lyngdoh, ahead of the upcoming season. Lyngdoh was a part of FC Pune City in the previous two editions of the league and will be at the heart of the reigning champions’ midfield engine-room after they made him their costliest buy in the pre-season draft. He also played for Bengaluru FC during their highly successful stint in the Hero I-League and will join forces with plenty of known faces from his time with the Blues.

The 31-year-old from Shillong recently sat down with indiansuperleague.com and spoke about the latest chapter of his footballing journey.

On his reunion with former teammates like Robin Singh, Darren Caldeira, Shankar Sampingiraj and with technical director Ashley Westwood, from his time with Bengaluru, Lyngdoh said: “It’s a new team and a new season, so i think familiar faces are going to be good for the team. These guys know the system, so I think it’s easier to get in faster. And I think it’s going to be good.”

The technically gifted playmaker isn’t fazed by the pressure either judging by his reply to how ATK will cope with the burden of being defending champions. “I think performing under pressure is what makes you champions. Kolkata has done that in the past couple of years, so I think this is going to be another one. And obviously, we hope to retain the title,” he asserted confidently.

The India international also believes that ATK being the most successful team in ISL history goes to show that they know the right approach to a season. “In three years, they have lifted the trophy twice, obviously they are doing things right along with the management. And now they have a good technical team coming in as well.”

Lyngdoh will be hoping that Kolkata continue their dominance in the ISL when they take on 2016 finalists Kerala Blasters FC at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan on November 17 in what will be Hero ISL 2017-18’s curtain raiser.
