If the league stage of Hero Indian Super League 2016 is anything to go by, then it would be safe to assume that the remaining five matches this season are set to be blockbuster encounters as all four teams head into the semis confident about their title shot. The league stage this year was nothing short of spectacular and had its fair share of ‘goosebumps’ moments with several milestones reached and records set. After a slow start that witnessed 60 goals at an average of 1.88/match in the first 32 matches, the action intensified during the remaining 24 fixtures of the league stage that saw 74 goals scored at an average of 3.08. Even though the number of goals scored during the league stage this year (134) is less than that of Hero ISL 2015 (171), it is still more than Hero ISL 2014’s overall tally of 129 goals. The conversion rate this season is also at an all-time high at 12.5%. This season also saw the 350th and 400th goal in Hero ISL history being scored by Delhi Dynamos FC’s Marcelinho and Kean Lewis respectively.Chennaiyin FC kept intact their proud record of having the first domestic scorer in the league coming from with the Super Machans ranks. Jayesh Rane netted the first goal during their 2-2 draw against Atlético de Kolkata to follow the likes of Balwant Singh and Jeje Lalpekhlua, who were the first Indian scorers in Hero ISL 2014 and Hero ISL 2015 respectively. Chennai also became the only side to score 20 or more goals in all three editions of the Hero ISL despite their unsuccessful title defence, while their star man up front Jeje can be proud of being the only Indian to have managed at least one goal and one assist in every ISL season.Delhi Dynamos FC are the only other team to score more than 20 goals so far. In fact, their tally of 27 goals in the league stage this year is second only to the 29 goals FC Goa managed in their first 14 matches last year. Of the 27 goals scored by the Lions so far, 14 of them have been either scored or assisted by their Brazilian talisman Marcelinho. The 29-year-old from Rio de Janeiro, who became the first Delhi Dynamos FC player to score a hat-trick in Hero ISL history, looks on course to break Stiven Mendoza (13 goals + 3 assists = 16) and Iain Hume’s (11 goals + 4 assists = 15) goal contribution records from last season. One unwanted record Delhi logged over the course of the season was that they became the first team to lose a match after scoring three goals during their 4-3 thriller against FC Pune City.If Delhi have set the benchmark in attack then Mumbai City FC must be credited for showing the way to other teams in defence. The only side to be making a maiden semis appearance this year, Mumbai scored as many goals (16) as they did last season. However, it’s their defence that has made the difference this year having ended the league stage with the least number of goals conceded (8 goals) in Hero ISL history, while also keeping the maximum number of clean sheets (8). Another record Mumbai can be proud of is that they are the only side to have scored a hat-trick in every edition of the league after Diego Forlan’s treble in their 5-0 win over Kerala Blasters FC – which also happens to be the biggest win this season – saw him join Sunil Chhetri and Andre Moritz.Unlike Mumbai, however, Atlético de Kolkata have been in the final 4 of the Hero ISL before, having appeared in the semis in both the previous editions of the league, making them the only side to be a part of all three semi-finals. ATK’s route to the semis though saw was rather unusual given they qualified with just four wins, the least by any semi-finalists in the history of the league. Their eight draws are also the most by any semi-finalist in the league’s history, while their two losses are the least number of defeats by a team that has qualified for the final 4.FC Goa and Chennaiyin’s early exit afforded ATK the distinction of being recognised as the only side to qualify for the semis in every edition. However, last season’s champion and runners-up, Chennai and Goa brought down the curtain on their campaign in spectacular fashion at Fatorda as they played their final game of the season against each other at the venue of last season’s final to produce another thriller. This time the Gaurs got the better of the Super Machans by beating them 5-4 in the highest-scoring game in league history. It also saw Chennai become the first side to lose a match after scoring four goals in a match.
