FC Pune City have added to their ranks last year’s Hero Indian Super League (ISL) Golden Boot winner Marcelo Leite Pereira, better known as Marcelinho. The Brazilian, who plied his trade for Delhi Dynamos FC last season, will also reunite with former teammates Kean Lewis and Marcos Tebar, both of whom made an identical switch earlier.Marcelinho lit up the stage last season with 10 goals and five assists, and was instrumental in Delhi’s progress to the semi-finals as the third-placed team. He was the tip of the lethal attacking trio that was also made up of Lewis and Richard Gadze and fed constantly by an equally lethal Florent Malouda. This season though, he dons the Pune jersey and looks to be the ideal player to spearhead a team that managed a lowly sixth-place finish in the last edition of the league.Possessing a dangerous left foot – one of the best in the business – the 30-year-old has raw pace and dazzling feet, a combination that has destroyed many defenders in the ISL last year. So much so, that it was impossible to keep the striker in check. Because when he was not scoring, he was providing – and both with abundance.A player who is never short on stamina, Marcelinho could pop up with goals from anywhere and everywhere; whether it was a long-ranger or point-blank goals, or even finding the back of the net from a tight angle. His deft first touches and ball control were second to none as he used to run riot in the opposition defence. In ISL 2016, he managed 46 shots, of which 26 were on target and both were more than anyone else in the league.Marcelinho, who started off his professional career in Spain with Atlético Madrid B and had consequent spells in Brazil, Greece, the United Arab Emirates and Italy before his induction into the ISL, is certainly not one who is short on experience, varied as it is across different continents. While for the Dynamos this is a big loss as far as their attacking prowess is concerned, Marcelinho’s link up with Lewis and Tebar should pay FC Pune City dividends. With his feet already settled to the Indian pitch, a second stint in the league can only promise of even better things to come.
