Hero Indian Super League 2016 came to a close in pulsating fashion after Atlético de Kolkata beat Kerala Blasters FC 4-3 on penalties at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Kochi on Sunday. The 2016 final will go down in league history as the first to be decided on penalties after it ended 1-1 at the culmination of extra time, setting the stage for a penalty shoot-out to mark a fitting end to a sensational season that saw plenty of eye-catching moments. Here indiansuperleague.com takes a look at some of the interesting snippets from the third edition of the league.•Atlético de Kolkata have scored the maximum number of penalties in normal time (10) over the course of three editions, with three of them coming this season, all scored by Iain Hume.•The passing accuracy took a dip this season. In the last two seasons, all teams had a passing accuracy of above 70%. This season there are five teams (Atlético de Kolkata-69.15%, Mumbai City FC- 68.37%, FC Goa- 68.67, Kerala Blasters FC- 64.76%, FC Pune City- 69.52%) whose figures have gone below that mark. Delhi Dynamos FC top the charts with a passing accuracy of 74.36 this season.•Chennaiyin FC may not have made it to this year’s semi-finals. However, they are the only team whose average ball possession has been 50% or more in all the three editions (50%, 51% and 50% respectively).•Both the previous two seasons saw all teams register more than 150 shots. This season, only four teams have surpassed that mark (Delhi-177, Kolkata-167, Mumbai-164 and Kerala-157).•FC Goa and Atlético de Kolkata have the unwanted record of being shown the most number of red cards in a season with both receiving four reds each this year.• Only Delhi Dynamos have completed more than 5,000 passes this season and have an overall total of 5499. The only other teams to have ever achieved that feat are FC Goa (5133 in 2014), Chennaiyin FC (5022 in 2015) and Delhi Dynamos FC (5378 in 2015).•The first edition of the league saw all teams making more than 300 interceptions. Hero ISL 2015 witnessed only two teams to have crossed the 200 mark (Chennai with 204 and Delhi with 205). This year only ATK reached that mark with exactly 200 interceptions in 2016. Mumbai, with 199 interceptions, just fall short of that mark. Kolkata in the inaugural season made 429 interceptions, the most by any team, also making them the only side to have ever crossed the 400-mark.•The 2014 edition of the Hero ISL also saw every team completing more than 350 clearances. All teams exceeded 500 clearances last year with Kolkata’s 804 being an all-time high. ATK are also the only team to cross the 800-mark. This season, however, it was Mumbai City FC that made the most number of clearances (430).•There were 48 goals scored from outside the box this year, as compared to only 12 last season. The first edition, though had 49 such goals.•A total of 26 headers were scored this season, two less than last season (28) and eight more than the inaugural edition (18).•FC Goa made the most number of saves (54) this year. FC Pune City are second after the Gaurs in that regard with 50 saves to their credit in 2016.
