Hero Indian Super League 2016 came to an exhilarating end on Sunday with Atlético de Kolkata being crowned champions following a 4-3 win over Kerala Blasters FC on penalties after it ended 1-1 in normal time. In keeping with the theme of the season the final had its fair share of drama owing to some dogged defending. In fact, defending took precedence all season, as a result of which strikers had a tough time and only three hat-tricks came to pass compared to last season’s eight. Here indiansuperleague.com celebrates Hero ISL 2016’s hat-trick heroes, who set the stage ablaze with outstanding performances for their respective teams.Diego Forlan (Mumbai City FC)Mumbai City FC’s marquee player Diego Forlan scored the first hat-trick of the season against Kerala Blasters FC in Mumbai. He opened the scoring in the 5th minute with a sublime first-time finish and got his second nine minutes later when he curled a delightful free-kick into the top corner. The Uruguayan icon completed his hat-trick in the 63rd minute with a side-foot finish through Kerala custodian Graham Stack’s legs. Mumbai went on to win the game 5-0 after Cafu and Lucian Goian also got on the scoresheet. It was the biggest win of the season and kept intact the Mumbaikars’ proud record of being the only team to have netted a hat-trick in all three seasons (Andre Moritz in Hero ISL 2014 and Sunil Chhetri in Hero ISL 2015).Dudu Omagbemi (Chennaiyin FC)The second hat-trick of the season came from Chennaiyin FC’s Dudu Omagbemi against NorthEast United FC in Chennai. In a 3-3 thriller, the Nigerian opened the scoring in the 34th minute after getting ahead of his markers at the near post and heading the ball into the back of the net. Dudu scored his second of the night in the 45th minute when he flicked in Jerry Lalrinzuala’s cross beyond NorthEast custodian Subrata Paul. The Nigerian completed his hat-trick nine minutes from full-time as he bundled in a cross from the right into an unguarded net. Even though Chennaiyin didn’t get the win on the night, Dudu became the first man to score a hat-trick for two different teams having also scored a treble in FC Goa’s 7-0 win against Mumbai in Hero ISL 2015.Marcelinho (Delhi Dynamos FC)The final hat-trick of the season and arguably the best of the lot was scored by Delhi Dynamos FC’s Brazilian talisman and Hero ISL 2016 golden boot winner Marcelinho. The 29-year-old scored his hat-trick during a devastating 17-minute blitz against FC Goa that helped the Lions to a 5-1 win at home. Delhi had fallen behind in that match to a Fulganco Cardozo goal in the 31st minute. Marcelinho though restored parity seven minutes later when Florent Malouda took a quick free kick and passed the ball to him. His sublime first touch took him away from his marker, allowing him to dispatch comfortably into the back of the net. The second goal came three minutes after the restart when he unleashed a thunderous effort from distance that kissed the inside of the post on its way into the back of the net. Marcelinho completed his hat-trick three minutes from the hour mark when he controlled a long ball from Marcos Tebar before turning Debarata Roy inside out and slotting past the goalkeeper to become the Dynamos’ first-ever hat-trick scorer.
